Why do Swedes celebrate waffle day on March 25? It is all due to a misunderstanding actually.
The shift from a religious celebration to Waffle Day occurred because the Swedish Vårfrudagen, meaning “Our Lady’s Day” (the Feast of the Annunciation), sounds similar to Våffeldagen (“waffle day”) in faster speech, and so over time Swedes began calling it Waffle Day and celebrating by eating waffles.
In Sweden most people eat their waffles with fresh berries and whipped cream and some sort of jam; typically blueberry, strawberry, raspberry or cloudberry jam.
Recipe: 6-8 waffles
- 3 1/2 oz butter
- 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 1/6 cups milk
- 2 eggs
Felix cloudberry jam, whipped cream and sugar
- Melt butter.
- Whip together flour, baking powder and salt with half of the milk until you have an even batter.
- Pour in the rest of the milk, eggs and the melted butter, whip until thoroughly mixed.
- Heat the waffle iron and brush with butter. Pour about ¾ dl (5 tbsp) batter and bake.
Serve together with whipped cream, berries and cloudberry jam.
