The southern Swedish region of Skåne is known as ‘Sweden’s bread basket’, thanks to its fertile land, dappled forests, warm seas and long hours of sunlight. Despite being a relatively small area, Skåne produces half the country’s food and the people pride themselves on being at the forefront of Sweden’s culinary scene.

The people of Skåne take their food inspiration from the sea, forests and meadows, with specialities ranging from the very simple asparagus, strawberries, apples, creamy milk and honey, to caraway pork, egg cake and goose. Visitors will find a farmer’s shop on every corner, selling delicious regional products to locals and tourists alike.

For locally sourced drinks, there is no place better than Skåne. Skåne boils, ferments, bubbles and hisses with juice, mulled wine, apple juice, wine, champagne, schnapps and beer.  The world’s third-largest spirits brand ABSOLUT is produced exclusively in Åhus, Skåne. The soft grainy character of ABSOLUT derives from Skåne’s rolling fields of winter wheat, which has proved to be ideal for the production of this quality vodka.

Other must-try spirit brands include Spirit of Hven Organic Distilled Gin, which is stored in oak barrels with fresh herbs.  After maceration, the mixture is brewed gently in unique copper boilers, which gives the spirit its delicate flavour – hinting at citrus, juniper and vanilla. A Swedish version of schnapps, Brännvin, from Snällerröd is also a real treat and their Aquavit is the drink of choice during festive periods and the crayfish season.  Drunk as both an aperitif and a digestif – it is part and parcel of Swedish tradition.

If you prefer a softer version of home-grown drinks, then at Kiviks Musteri and Äpplets hus, you can stroll around the apple orchards, sample freshly squeezed juices and buy cider, juice, soup and jam amongst other delights.

If it’s Swedish wine you’re keen to try, then you really need look no further than the wealth of wonderful vineyards around the region.   Hällåkra Vineyard, for example is situated in the northern area of Trelleborg countryside and sits on top of a hill and here you’ll find over 10,000 vines with Rondo, Solaris, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, which yield the finest red and white wines.
